Modernism in the Midwest: Navigating Columbus, IN

Kristin Barry is an Assistant Professor of Architecture who teaches courses in architecture history/theory and design. Kristin’s research interests are rooted in the physical interpretation of history through applied design. She explores the methods through which the built environment can illustrate history for a less-specialized audience. During her DSL Fellowship year, Barry will explore the use of digital applications to interpret architectural heritage as a non-invasive measure. The project will develop a beta version of a mobile, geo-located augmented reality application that incorporates public access to archival material. When complete, the demonstration will serve as a prototype for a large interpretive project that facilitates engagement with historically significant elements of the built environment in Columbus and, eventually, other communities. Barry will seek further funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and other sources.
