Digital Feed: Big Data and Smart Computing

At noon on Wednesday, September 19th, 2018 and again on Thursday, September 20th, Shaoen Wu, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ball State University, presented on the topic “Big Data and Smart Computing” in the Schwartz Digital Complex in Bracken Library.

Wu, an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ball State, introduced Ball State’s new computation capacity. This NSF-funded resource provides the infrastructure necessary to conduct research on big data in it various forms. Examples include large-scale data/text analysis, bioinformatics/cheminformatics, numerical computing, machine learning and deep learning voice recognition research, language translation, and accelerated graphics rendering for 3D modeling. The new infrastructure has 500 TB of storage and creates opportunities for faculty from many disciplines to engage in research that analyzes big data in the various forms it can take. Wu’s talk presented examples of how this resource can be used for a variety of research projects. The lunch and talk are co-sponsored by the Sponsored Projects Administration and the Computer Science Department and it also served as the opening event of this year’s Sponsored Projects Administration’s Colloquia Series.
