Lauren Tilton, Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Richmond, will present a talk about the Photogrammar project titled “Seeing the Nation: Digital Humanities, Documentary, and the Construction of Social History.” Photogrammar reframes the iconic Great Depression-era photographic images by the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information for the twenty-first century, and offers pathways to fresh interpretations of this collection. Tilton will discuss how computational analysis can reveal the federal government’s investment in a broader vision of America and its nation’s social history. It will also explore how a digital, public arts and humanities project allows us to remix the archive and to reconsider lesser known photographers’ role in shaping the visual record of the nation.

Tilton’s talk is organized by the Digital Scholarship Lab and co-sponsored by the Department of History and the School of Art. It is free and open to the public.
