The Dark Store Theory and Big Box Stores

Michael Burayidi is Professor of Urban Planning. He has written widely on downtown redevelopment and planning with multiple publics. He is working with the DSL and University Libraries’ GIS Research and Map Collection to produce a visualization of urban property tax revenues that illustrates impact of low-density land use (such as big box stores surrounded by parking lots). Using tax data from nine cities in Iowa, Burayidi will develop interactive visualizations for each community using Esri’s ArcGis Storymap platform. These tools will offer local leaders a means to explore the effects of various development decisions, particularly in small and mid-sized cities.
