Diarist A16 Day08

April 27, 2018

6:50 AM
Up before my alarm went off after tossing and turning since about 5:00. Finally fell back to sleep about 5:45 I think. While lying there worrying about things and thinking about things I could be doing, I thought about getting up and starting my diary. But since I am off work on a personal day today I really wanted to sleep in. I did get an hour extra time in bed. On a normal work day my alarm goes off at 5:50.
While starting the electric kettle and getting ready for tea I turn on Morning Joe/MSNBC. The Korean War may finally be ending apparently. Lots of stuff about Trump’s call into Fox & Friends yesterday morning and the subsequent “interview.” Bill Cosby found guilty. Wow.

7:30 AM
Husband P is up. He also slept in due to a personal day. Gives me a kiss and starts making coffee. Heads outside to check for dew. He must have decided there is enough dew to spread the fertilizer on the grass because he hasn’t come back for the coffee. He has been working hard on the yard getting it looking as nice as is possible given this cool spring. We have a party/bonfire coming up for daughters A and M who will be graduating from Ball State. A is finishing an MA in English and M is finishing a BA in History. So proud of them. I sure hope the weather is nice. I love BSU’s outside ceremony on the quad. It goes on a long time but when the weather is nice it is so pretty and I love the history of it.

8:00 AM
Drinking tea, still watching Morning Joe and checking email for work and home. Send an email to the high school attendance secretary son C will be absent today. Checking in with Facebook invitation for the graduation celebration bonfire for the girls.
Got lost in an online CNN story about “The 53 most stunning lines from Trump’s ‘Fox & Friends’ interview. Talked over the news and plans for the day with P. Now C. is awake and we coordinate shower times and what time we need to leave for Indianapolis. We have to be down at the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre/Indiana Roof Ballroom by 11:30. C is being honored by the Association of School Principals as an “Indiana Academic All-Star.” We don’t want to be late and not sure about the parking situation. Decide we should leave by 9:45. C goes off to iron.

9:10
Running behind as I spent time talking with A who is in a funk about graduating and her time at BSU coming to an end. I tried but not sure anything I say will help. I told her if it hurts to leave that means you have been in the right place for the past several years. I tell her I think I heard something similar from Phil Dunphy. She does not seem to appreciate my Modern Family reference. She really is down. Head out to see if C needs ironing help as he is not in the shower yet.

10:35
After a rush of getting ready finally we are now about halfway to Indy for this luncheon. Our car conversation has bounced around but includes: when are we going to get to go see the new Avengers movie that started last night-maybe next weekend as this one is pretty busy but then, how busy next weekend will be with graduation and an out of town friend coming for that who will be staying at our house, given how busy next weekend will be P says he will need to get busy with getting his finals ready to give, what C is missing at school today-will need to make up a test in government, homework he has this weekend-he is behind on the final paper for English and wants to get it finished this weekend as well as needing to do the notes for anatomy which are always extensive, he will need to go to the lab at BSU tonight since he missed it today-he is doing an independent study two periods a day, wants to hang out with his girlfriend tonight as well but once we get home will first have to go to track practice. I am exhausted just thinking about all we have to do coming up to get ready for the graduation weekend.

11:20
Arrive at the ballroom after NOT getting lost AND managing to find convenient parking. Amazed. The Indianapolis Repertory Theatre building is beautiful! I am glad I had tried to look it up ahead of time because the event has turned out to be pretty formal and I had not realized that when C first received the invitation. His principal, the teacher he nominated to be honored, and the superintendent have arrived. Send some pictures to M and A so they can see what we are up to and how fancy it is. Send same pictures to my sister in SC. She doesn’t know where we are and is baffled by the decor and all the suits etc. Finally tell her. SHE is with her husband who is getting a colonoscopy so has been entertained by my pictures while killing time.

3:00
On the way home after getting turned around trying to leave downtown Indy. The luncheon was very nice and C received a plaque. We laugh again about what one is really supposed to do with such things. Other than displaying them at your graduation open house.
C falls asleep in the car and I take a funny picture of him with the plaque leaned up against him. He is also wearing floral printed sunglasses.

4:30
Been home for a little while. C off to practice and the lab, P has gone to get a load of mulch and has started spreading it. I am organizing the diary notes I tried to take in the moment during the day. Checking in with twitter. . .which I am barely able to do. . .to see the tweet the principal was working on while at the luncheon. I actually manage to retweet. Beautiful day and I have been sitting outside on the patio but will have to move inside soon. Sunny but it is chilly. I love our yard though and have been watching the birds at the feeder including so many goldfinches.

6:00
Got to get dinner going. I am making what my sister and I call “nostalgia” burgers which is hamburgers the way my dad, who has since passed away, made them when he would come for his weekend visits when we were kids. He would pick my sister and I up at my mom’s house then we would spend the weekend at my grandmothers and on Friday nights and he would always make hamburgers. We had VERY regimented rituals for activities and food during those visits.
I have been buying brioche buns at Aldi that the kids especially love. I usually have mine “naked” though. We never had them on buns when I was with grandma and dad.
First I start the cauliflower roasted with olive oil. After that goes about 15 minutes I start the burgers.

6:30
C is home from practice and the lab and hits the shower. P comes in from spreading the mulch looking pretty tired. He will shower next. I turn on the NBC evening news to watch while I finish cooking dinner. Cheese on the burgers for the guys and I butter and grill up the buns. Going fancy tonight.

7:00
I turn the TV over to PBS Newshour while I get some lettuce out, slice some tomatoes and onion.

7:15
C is finishing eating and getting ready to head out to his girlfriend’s house.

7:30
P is out of the shower and we watch the rest of the PBS news together. He is waiting for the Pacers vs. Cavs playoff game to start at 8:00. He is from the Cleveland area and is rooting for the Cavs. While cooking I have been trying to get my digital camera to download the pictures from today to the Nikon app on my phone. It has been acting glitchy but is now refusing to connect with the camera. I keep trying to problem solve that while eating.

8:00
P starts watching the game and I am also emptying the dishwasher and doing the dishes.

8:30
While watching the game I keep working on this frustrating connectivity issue between the phone and camera. Very frustrating!

9:30
FINALLY after deleting the app, resetting the camera, reinstalling the app and going through the steps to connect the devices the pictures start downloading. There are not that many of them. And they aren’t even that good. But I needed this problem solved as it has been giving me trouble for a while.
A is not home yet. She said she was going to stay at school and grade but I expected she would be home before now.
Oh dear, the Pacers are winning big. Now that I have emerged from technology hell I notice the game.
Paul has gone outside to set the pile of sticks and yard waste he has been collecting on fire. He also wants to burn the old adirondack chairs we are finally admitting we can no longer salvage. He wants to do it at night so as not to bother the neighbors.

10:00
Going to send pictures to my mom and our friend in Michigan and I fiddle with THAT for a while which isn’t working out either. Google photos will be the death of me. I miss my old Kodak software.
P comes back and says it is too cold to stay out by the fire. I look out the window and say. . .did you get the hose hooked up today? Ummm. . .no. He always thinks the fire will be OK and I am always worried.

10:30
We end up out back standing around watching it. Why is fire so mesmerizing? He throws the second chair on the fire and I send pictures of the interesting flame pattern to M and my sister in SC. I feel a lot better with the fire being monitored.

11:00
Finally getting down to a size I feel is safe to leave and we head in. A arrives home from BSU. C is still out. He is supposed to leave the girlfriend’s and head home at 12:00. I will find it hard to sleep until I know he is home safe.

11:15
P said maybe we can put on a movie and watch in bed but he is already asleep by the time I get my contacts out, teeth brushed and face washed. He is exhausted from moving and spreading mulch. A tells me about her day. It was her last day on the job she loves at BSU but she seems ok. I climb in to bed to write a bit more. I put on my Northern Exposure DVD to help me relax. Halfway through season five. I record my food for the day in an app I have called My Fitness Pal. I like to do this throughout the day usually but I didn’t have time.

11:45
I go to the kitchen to get a snack to eat in bed after figuring out my calories for the day. C comes home early. Now I can go to sleep. It has been a long but really good day.
