Diarist A30 Day07

Diary Day #2
2-4-18

7:20 AM – Waking up to the end of what has been a pretty crazy few weeks. We have a new baby who is two months old and obviously not sleeping through the night. We have a very high energy two and a half year old. My wife just had foot surgery, so she is in a boot and using crutches, unable to do much of the daily help she would typically do with the kids. So her parents are in town from out of state. It’s a blessing to have them here, but also makes for a full and crazy house. The mornings are quiet, at least for a few minutes, and that is nice. Sunday mornings are always a bit crazy because one of the biggest things I do each week is give sermon at church. So I try to get in the focused mind set I need to be in, but it can be tough when life is so crazy.

7:30 AM – I just got a phone call that the hosts of the building we meet in did not show up to open the doors. I have the only other key. This is not optimal as now I have to leave the house and my wife and parents in law are still sleeping (they took care of the baby through the night) and the kids should be up soon. Luckily, my father in law actually had gotten up early and went for a walk, so just as I was trying to figure out what to do, he comes in the door and I tell him I have to run quickly and he agrees to take care of the kids. It’s all a bit hectic.

9:10 AM – Once at church, everything goes pretty smoothly. I needed that. The set up of all the equipment, band rehearsal, etc. all gets done in time. Now I have a little time to focus before the service starts at 10:30.

12:10 PM – Church went well. Felt like the sermon was challenging and well received. I felt connected to the message, which isn’t always the case. I had some good contacts today and by the time I get home, I am pleased but mentally and physically ready for a rest.

1:30 PM – After lunch, both kids head for a nap….. and so does dad.

3:20 PM – Nap was good. I don’t always sleep well, but got some good and much needed rest. The rest of our day will be pretty low key, if not hectic. No big plans. We will probably do some carry out for dinner and watch the Super Bowl in our house.

5:45 PM – After a few hours of playing with the kids, we ran out for a few errands and to pick up dinner. Subway for me and the in-laws, Chinese food for my wife. Pretty fancy.

6:30 PM – We make it home just in time for kickoff. We put a blanket on the floor in the living room and eat picnic style in front of the TV. Go Eagles.

10:45 PM – Game over. Eagles won. I used to care a lot more about football and the Super Bowl (pre kids) but that has waned a bit. But I still enjoyed watching the games and the commercials. It’s not the same, of course, trying to keep a two and a half year old in line and then get her to bed in the middle of the game, but such is parenthood at this stage. I keep reminding myself it’s a strange time in life…. Having two little ones and a wife who is recovering from surgery. It won’t last long. I always complain about how fast life goes, so why not sit back and enjoy the chaos. Sure, I’m not getting enough sleep to string two thoughts together, but that is just this season of life. I should savor it. I will keep reminding myself of that. As for now, I am off to bed to rest up enough to get up and do it all over again tomorrow.
