Diarist A34 Day07

Diary Entry,

For most of my life, “Superbowl Sunday” typically included getting last minute food preps to go with a get together of friends to watch the big game. This year was different. The weekend is the only time that I get to spend with my family so I enjoy it as much as I can even though that is the busiest time of the week.
We started off the day with girl scout cookie orders. My daughter has sold more cookies already this year than she did last year and being in the GS has helped her break out of her shyness that used to shut her down in public settings. The only drawback to those sales…..we have to deliver a lot of those all over town. My wife has an ex coworker who ordered some cookies so we drove to her house then went to a family that I have always been around. They were my cub scout den leaders. I played little league baseball with one of their sons. He became one of my best friends and when he went to the Marines he asked me to look after his younger brother and sister. I ended up starting a car club with the younger brother and being a solid role model for his sister. Over the years we have all built families of our own and focused our attention on our own lives. The sister has fought some demons with substance abuse over the years and just before Christmas was found dead by her father. I was at the funeral but this was the first time I had seen them since the funeral. It was nice to be around them and show them support so we hung out there for a few hours. The cookie order was a nice excuse to see them. After that we went to my wife’s grandmothers house who also ordered cookies and hung out there for awhile and watched the first quarter of the Superbowl.
I have been one of the general population who has not been happy with the unpatriotic acts of players in the NFL, so I have already canceled the NFL package on my TV and have only watched a few minutes of games randomly throughout the year. After a guy puts on socks that portrays police officers as pigs and wears a communist leader on his shirt who murdered people to keep power and control and then gets with a girl who is an outspoken black militant I have a hard time supporting his agenda when its easy to see that his black parent wanted nothing to do with him and he was adopted by a white family who provided everything to him that he lacked in life yet he openly bashes others who have never oppressed him. My family has had multiple generations who have made sacrifices for that flag so I do not support someone who refuses to show support to it. Especially when you look deeper and see that the NFL actually gets tax payer funding for their stadiums as well as anytime a service member is recognized on TV or and them playing the national anthem and showing support for it yet they are allowed to openly disrespect it. To make a long story short I have now broken the habit of watching games outside of the Superbowl.
So after the first quarter we stopped at a drive thru window and then went home to watch the rest of the game. I was stunned with the fourth down call for the pass to the quarterback Nick Foles right before halftime. That will go down as one of the must gutsy and best calls in the big game. Halftime was surprising to see Justin Timberlake who has gone from a boy band to a hip hop musician and now is somehow fooling people into thinking is a rugged man by putting on a plaid button up shirt and growing a beard. The show itself was solid. No surprise entrances so I’m sure some will be disappointed Janet Jackson or N’Sync weren’t able to be brought into the performance. His surprise was a tribute to Prince who he claimed was a huge influence and the best musician of all time but I thought years ago he had taken verbal jabs at Prince but I assume with the game being in Minnesota it was a way to tie in the local fans. The only other major surprise outside of the game itself being won by the Eagles over the Patriots was that Macolm Butler not playing a single down on defense yet for the last few years has been one of their best defenders.
The only other thing that I did was after the big game my family went to bed and since I work second shift I remain awake for a few more hours so I spent that time listening to pastors on YoutTube. I came across a man named Jeff Durbin recently and went back to watch some of his recorded messages. While watching some of them GOD put a conviction on me to get him to speak at my church and even put a number in my head that is almost two years of our tithing to help with the costs since he lives in Las Vegas. It will be a while before I know what will pan out from that but I will email a pastor there very soon about that.
