Diarist E53 Day13

Diary Day: 2/20/20

The day started with a fever dream. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what it was about except clay and spinning. I don’t know. It felt like I had developed this new technique for throwing but it felt like more whole body was turning wildly. I woke up several times with a start but couldn’t shift because I got the last round of vaccines yesterday. So a sidesleeper with a vivid dream and I couldn’t sleep properly because both my shoulders hurt too much to put pressure on them.

That also made throwing this morning uncomfortable. Despite that, I was able to make two teapot bodies, one spout, and most of my lids according to my professor. To his mind, certain forms require different lids despite wanting to play with lids and what works….. But hey! T knows best. (It’s fucking ridiculous how condescending he is but that’s for another time.)

Soooo…… That felt fairly productive despite outside interferences.

We had studio cleanup today, and with the visiting artist coming later on, J wanted to remind us that we keep our studios clean and not leave shit in random places. “Don’t want people thinking we’re dirty hoarding maniacs especially in front of visitors like say an Academic Advisor tour group with potential students.” I mean he’s right. I just didn’t think we were getting that bad. We also discussed a new charging schedule. I grabbed a couple Fridays in March and the last Friday of the semester. Then I finished cleaning out the plaster bucket. It’s a pain and should really be a two person job but I was feeling particularly stubborn. And in the end, I realized that the damn thing could have waited another week, but c’est la vie.

So once that was all taken care of, I finally got moving on the thing I had to get done today. I have casting molds that had to be put in today but I had to prepare everything before I set the kiln up. Lot of walking back and forth from one end of Glick to another but it was worth it. Between setting up kiln shelves, cleaning glass billets and just loading the damn molds into the kiln, I probably got 2,000 steps in. My glass molds are probably around twenty pounds with the billets before it goes up.

Anyway it took about three and half hours with help from some of my classmates, the coffin was started and with a long delay so that I could be around for top temperature tomorrow. By the time that it was done, everyone at Glick was getting ready to go AJ for the artist talk.

The rest of the day was spent eating from the Dumpling House, free junior frosties and helping out in the hot shop. I got home late and began to dread the morning. Getting up at 5:30 in the morning is not ideal for an art student.
