Diarist M03 Day 25

Eclipse diary

3/8/24

I’m excited! I’ve never seen an eclipse before. I’m glad it’s not cloudy outside like some people were predicting.

I spent the morning hanging out with my dad and brother since none of us had school or work.

I went outside to view the eclipse at 2:08 PM. I put on my solar eclipse glasses to look at the sun, and I was surprised to see the moon already covering part of the sun. It was so cool! My dad sat outside with me. He said that before I came outside, he saw a dark speck fly across the sun.

My brother was able to see some planets in a photo my dad took with a special app.

I hung out with my dad and brother on our deck, occasionally putting on my glasses to view the sun and its progress.

Our neighborhood has a lot of people walking around or waiting on their decks.

It’s 2:39 PM, and I can feel the sun isn’t quite as bright or powerful as it was half an hour ago.

It’s 2:49 PM, and it feels significantly cooler outside. Inside the house (I went to get tea), it’s really dark. I put my dog in her crate because I don’t want her to get scared (she’s reactive). There are a lot of people who came to our neighborhood to view it. There were quite a few bees flying around about half an hour ago. Now, they’re not buzzing around.

There are some geese in the center of the lake calling incessantly. Usually, waterfowls stay on the lake when it’s time for them to sleep because they’re protected from predators.

It is 3:04 PM, and birds have just started singing. They usually only do that at dawn and at dusk.

That was so cool! It got so dark outside. It looked like twilight. It dropped like 10° out here. My brother, dad, and myself were all outside, watching the eclipse. We heard people cheering and talking and honking in the distance.

I bet the wild animals out here are so confused.

The sensor lights in our neighborhood also went on when it was in full totality.

The geese in our neighborhood are honking like crazy. They just left the lake and are flying away.

Pretty much everyone is leaving and going back inside now.

It was so nice to see so many people outside, just hanging out and being human, looking up at the heavens.

It’s crazy how the sun and moon are the perfect size and at the perfect distance for a total solar eclipse to happen.

It’s 6:03 PM, and my family is watching a news recap from Fox about the eclipse. Fox News reporters are talking about it from the Indy Motor Speedway!

After seeing the eclipse, I’m mad that in middle school, we were forced to stay indoors with all the blinds closed for the partial eclipse (2017). Today was extraordinary. I feel bad for anyone who was forced to work during/stay inside during the eclipse.

It’s 6:34 PM, and I’m watching TikToks of the eclipse and people’s reactions to it. It’s so cute to see people from so many different places talking about a celestial event.

My mom said she heard frogs while watching the eclipse outside at work.
